This week…

The ex-pats are still returning – this week two cars at Stansted plus another at Gatwick and more enquiries for the UK. Elsewhere Sardinia is popular this year – this time Olbia with a regular client enquiring about a people-carrier and an economy car. Also in Italy an economy car at Rome Fuimicino airport and another at Forli. France was busiest with two cars for Dinard and bookings for Toulouse, Limoges and Nantes. There were also enquiries for Paris and a Renault Scenic at Tours. Spain was quiet, the lull before the storm surely, with a long-standing client confirming a … Continue Reading

Weddings and rental cars..

We have had a couple of instances recently where bookings could not be confirmed as the ladies involved had not changed their driving licences to their married names. This wouldn’t have been a problem had their passports and credit cards also remained in their maiden names so that there was a consistent identity in each case. Rental companies may allow a Marriage Certificate to confirm the change of name for a short period following a wedding but not a year or more after the event. Please remember that when changing your passport and credit cards to your new name, change … Continue Reading

Europa – not any more, Goldcar now!

From Spain comes notification that one the major Spanish companies is finalising its change of name. Known for most of its life as Europa, apparently change of name has been forced on the company as a result of pressure, including possible court action, from a much larger company that considers the name to be too close to its own. For the past three years a gradual process of identity change has been taking place, firstly as Europa Goldcar, then more recently as Goldcar Europa. By 01 November the company will trade solely as Goldcar. Over the course of the … Continue Reading

This week…

The UK was the place to visit this week. Several ex-pats, mostly regular clients, are arranging their Spring visit ‘home’ in late April or May. There were two bookings for Stansted and a one-way from Manchester to Southampton. Also possibly another one-way from Eastbourne to Gatwick. This is possible but the times, and also the £35 charge that rental companies now levy on UK one-way bookings, means that collecting and returning the car at Gatwick may be cheaper and more practical. Also in the UK were a 1-day rental at Leeds Bradford airport and a people-carrier for here in Ashford.

This week…

Back to busy this week after the pre-Easter lull. Many enquiries from earlier in the year came back to book as the summer holidays get closer. These included a car in Prague for a tour including Slovakia and Austria, an Italian one-way from Lamezia Terme to Empoli, a full-size car for Orlando International (MCO), a people-carrier in Majorca and an estate car for Paris CDG. Late business included a economy cars at Stansted and Nantes, and a 6-seater for Gerona on the Costa Brava. This car may be two bookings, from Gerona-Reus and then Reus-Gerona, as the car will not … Continue Reading

France and national holidays…

Like us, the French have national holidays throughout the year. Unlike us, they do not move these to the nearest weekend, they take them on the day of the week that they occur even if that is mid-week. Also, the French take these very seriously and most of the country closes for the day. This can include car rental offices at airports as friends of mine have just found out! They are flying in to Avignon airport on 08 May which we have now found out is a national holiday in France – Victory Day. None of the car rental … Continue Reading

This week…

A bit quieter this week as is normal with a holiday weekend and school holidays. However there was an estate car booked for Sardinia and a compact car for Heraklion in Crete plus a one-way from New York JFK airport to Boston. This was a great deal as there is one-way charge unlike most US one-way rentals. The clients are also popping over the Canadian border to visit Niagara as this is also permitted. Also in the US there was another Chicago-LA enquiry and the Crete clients have enquired about Washington DC to Miami for their next trip later in … Continue Reading
