In our post of 27 Oct. headed ‘Luxury people-carrier for airport transfers’ about Academy Cars, we indicated that there was a photo of their new Hyundai i800 people-carrier. Unfortunately, for technical reasons, it hasn’t been possible to post the promised photo. Times may be hard at the moment but the low-cost airlines are doing their best to make things brighter for 2009. Regular clients of carhirewarehouse moved to Italy a couple of years ago although they still book cars with us regularly on their trips back to the UK. In our post of 20th November titles ‘Post-WTM News’ we relayed the news that a number of Spanish car rental companies had announced that they would be implementing a local charge for collecting rental cars at airports. Along with many other UK agents and brokers, we expressed our dismay at this new charge. We also advised that we were unhappy with the current practice of the Spanish companies to introduce more new local charges rather than to increase their pre-paid rates to a viable level. Our friends at Goldcar have just advised that, having considered the responses of ourselves and many other agents and brokers, they will not now be implementing the new airport charge. Their Christmas/New Year supplements have been re-introduced but these are not substantial and revised rates for the period to 31st March have few increases but do include big reductions on people-carriers. We believe that other rental companies will also abandon the new charge although confirmation of this is awaited.
