Satellite Navigation or GPS systems are a recent invention that are now in everyday use. They are a simple and cheap way to avoid getting lost plus they offer a wide range of other information. This makes them invaluable when travelling in unfamiliar areas overseas whether on holiday, business or any other purpose. But are they available with hire cars?
The answer is a definite maybe. Many car rental companies now offer satellite navigation rental as an additional, extra cost service. But this service often has limitations. It may not be available at all of your rental companies offices. The number of units available may be limited – they must always be pre-booked. Often sat. navs. are not available for one-way rentals and where they are, a further and sometimes substantial, local charge is usually involved.
So what other options are there? There are two. First you may be able to book a car that has a GPS system as part of the standard specification. However these cars tend to be in the higher classes and may therefore be expensive. The alternative is to hire a sat nav system in the UK to take with you.
